GENERAL APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER

The Polski Owczarek Nizinny is a medium-sized dog, cobby, strong, and muscular, with a long, thick coat and an easy, smooth gait. It is resistant to unfavorable conditions, lively but self-controlled, watchful, bright, clever, and perceptive with an excellent memory

HEIGHT AT SHOULDERS

Dog, 45-50 cm. (18-20 in.);

Bitch, 42-47 cm. (16,5-18 in.)

TYPE

It is not desirable to diminish the size below the standard and make the dog delicate, as it should keep the character of a working dog.

UTILITY

It is easy to train, as it works as shepherd and as a watchdog. Transferred to town, it is a very good companion dog. Its coat , whwn well groomed, makes it look smart and attractive.

HEAD

General appearance: proportioned, medium sized, not too heavy, with profuse hair on the forhead, cheeks, and chin, which makes it look bigger than it actually is. The ratio between its mouth and skull is 1:1, or the muzzle may be a little shorter.

Skull: moderately broad, slightly domed. The forehead furrow and occiput palpable.

Stop: distinctly marked.

Mouth: the top line of the muzzle is straight, jaws strong.

Nose: a big, blunt nose with wide nostrills, as a dark as possible within the particular color.

Lips: tightly closed, with edges of the same color as the nose.

Teeth: strong, level, or scissor.

Eyes: medium size, of lively, penetrating gaze, oval not protruding. Color, hazel or brown. The edges of the lids must be as dark as possible.

Ears: medium sized, lively, heart-shaped, large at the base, set moderately high, drooping, their fore edge tightly set against the cheek.

NECK

Strong, muscular, of medium lenght, without any dewlap, held rather horizontally.

BODY

General appearance: silhouette rectangular rather than square.

Withers: distinctively marked.

Back: even, muscular, loins broad, well bound.

Croup: short, tightly cut.

Chest: deep, ribs moderately cut, neither flat nor barrel-like.

Belly: slightly drawn up.

TAIL

Innately short or rudimentary, or very shortly docked.

FOREQUARTERS

General appearance: as seen from the front and side, stright, a well-balanced stance due to a strong skeleton.

Shoulders: broad, of medium lenght, slant, well-bound, and muscular.

Metacarp: slightly slant in relation to the forearm.

Feet: oval, toes tight, slightly arched, with hard pads, claws short, possibly dark.

HINDQUARTERS

General appearance: well angled, straight as seen from behind.

Thigh: broad, well muscled.

Hock: distinct.

GAIT

Mostly smooth walking pace or trot. The dog is often an ambler

SKIN

Tight, without any folds.

COAT

The whole body is covered with a long, dense, shaggy thick coat, with a soft, dense undercoat. The long hair covers the eyes characteristically. Slightly wavy coat admissible.

COLOR

Every color and piebald allowed.

FAULTS

Head: round, apple shaped.

Profile: the topline of the muzzle convex or concave.

Nose and lips: lack of pigment.

Teeth: faulty dentition.

Eyes: light yellow or jackdaw eye.

Ears: set too high.

Back: weak or roach back.

Chest: greyhound or barrel-shaped.

Neck: held too high.

Loins: feeble.

Tail: if not docked, it should not be curled over the back.

Legs: incorrect stance, too long.

Coat: curly or short, without undercoat.

Character: nervous, cowardly, phlegmatic.
